AR Program Information

Our new online Accelerated Reader (AR) progam is finally in place and AR has begun!  Emerson is looking forward to another fun-filled year of reading!  Below you will find information on the celebrations we will be doing this year at Emerson as well as some frequently asked questions for those who would like to know more about the program.

2008-2009 Celebrations

We honor students for both individual and team success.

To celebrate individual success, we have an AR club that has two celebrations:  one in February and one in June.  By having multiple pathways of reaching the celebrations, we hope to engage all students in reading and encourage all students to take part.

¦  To qualify for the AR Club celebration in February, students can either (1) read at least 5 AR books within their reading level and pass their AR tests with an average of 85% accuracy or better or (2) read the number of pages for their grade level and pass the AR test with an average of 70% accuracy or better:

3rd Grade 4th Grade 5th Grade 6th Grade
500 pages 600 pages 800 pages 1000 pages

¦ To qualify for the AR Club celebration in June, students can either (1) read at least 10 AR books within their reading level and pass their AR tests with an average of 85% accuracy or better or (2) read the number of pages for their grade level and pass the AR test with an average of 70% accuracy or better:

3rd Grade 4th Grade 5th Grade 6th Grade
1000 pages 1200 pages 1600 pages 2000 pages

AR Wall of Fame

¦   To honor those students who go "above and beyond" their reading goals, Emerson has created an AR Wall of Fame.  To be on the AR Wall of Fame, students have either (1) read at least 20 AR books within their reading level and passed their AR tests with an average of 85% accuracy or better or (2) read double the number of pages for their grade level and pass the AR test with an average of 70% accuracy or better:

3rd Grade 4th Grade 5th Grade 6th Grade
2000 pages 2400 pages 3200 pages 4000 pages

School-wide Celebrations

To celebrate and honor teamwork, we have set a school-wide goal of earning 16,000 AR points.  We have planned celebrations along the way:

5,000 points                    =                 Crazy Hair/Hat Day

11,000 points                  =                 Sports Day

16,000 points                  =                 Western Day

All students are welcome to participate in the school-wide reading celebrations, regardless of the individual points earned.

Plus, once Emerson students reach our school goal, Mr. Church will be spending the day dressed up as a sumo wrestler.  This big hurrah at the end of the school year is very motivating for students… seeing their principal with his desk on the roof, duct taped to the gym wall, or slip-n-sliding into a pool of pudding is a lot of fun for students and has proven to be very motivational.

Frequently Asked AR Questions

What is Accelerated Reader?  Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized reading program.  It is intended to motivate students to read more books and challenge them to improve their reading skills and comprehension.  The program allows students to work at their own level and their own pace to reach personal goals as well as school goals.

What are the benefits to AR?  The program is designed to instill and foster a lifelong love of reading, encourage the development of critical thinking skills, and increase success in other areas of the language arts curriculum.  Research has shown that the more a child reads, the more he/she will succeed in school.

How does the Accelerated Reader program work?  The student reads an AR book appropriate to their reading level and then takes a computerized quiz to test their comprehension.  Students receive a varying number of points depending on the length of the book, the reading level of the book, and the number of correct answers on the AR test.  The results provide students with immediate feedback on how well they understood the book.

Where will students find AR books?  The library at Emerson has a large quantity of Accelerated Reader books.   All of the books are marked with an orange AR sticker to signify that there is a corresponding AR test.  Students are welcome to read books from our school library, the public library, or books from home.  With the new online AR system in place, we have access to over 100,000 AR tests.  To see if a book has an AR test, parents and students are welcome to use the AR Book Finder website www.arbookfind.com.  The first screen is a survey to identify the type of user accessing the site, but after the first screen, a search is available for all of the AR tests.
